My Story

I wanted to be a singer BADLY since young, and without the privilege of attaining a music diploma or music degree certification when I was young, I became a working singer through my own means (took quality private singing lessons over years after attaining my Bachelor Degree in Psychology) and subsequently launched an independent album of original songs that clinched the 'Best Independent Album' award in Singapore (2008), at the age of 28.
That led me to being signed by a Japanese record label that supported me to release 3 albums in Southeast Asia (including Japan), and had my music distributed on streaming platforms.

During that time, I also set up my own entertainment agency that led to the recruitment and nurturing of many local singers and musicians over 20 years. The agency became my livelihood but more importantly, gave me opportunities to perform at prestigious events by APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Conference), Interpol, SIA, AirFrance, Dior, Renault, Lexus, etc, and had the opportunities to represent Singapore to perform in Hong Kong and Thailand.

Now that I am teaching in music colleges (for over 10 years) and I look back on my life, it made me realise that having a college diploma or music certification does not guarantee anyone to become a professional singer. If anything, most people who enroll themselves in music colleges want to have a 'Plan B', where they envision themselves becoming a music teacher 'just in case I can't make it to become a professional singer'.

I am a living example that if you want to become a professional singer, you just have to
- learn from the right vocal coach and mentor with rich industry experience
- hone your singing skills and build experience over time
- build your own network in the music industry
- have the determination to break through in your route to success (that's why a mentor is important)
- see you for who you are (identify yourself strengths and weaknesses well)

FAQ
1. How Is This Programme Different From Bevlyn's usual One-To-One Lesson Packages?
The Recreational One-To-One Packages are good for people who want to improve on their singing for recreational purposes. The recreational packages are flexible to the student's needs (Bevlyn responds to what the students want to sing). Bevlyn will take them through the singing syllabus until the student feels satisfied with the standard of singing that they attain (differ from student to student). While there is a validity period to individual packages, students determines the frequency of lessons, and commitment to their learnings.

The Professional Singer Training Programme has a regimented set of practical outcome that Bevlyn deems important for anyone who wants to become a professional singer to achieve(part-time or full-time), for career sustainability. The weekly lessons are necessary to ensure that the student stays focused and committed to learning, and there are targeted sessions that allow the students to jump into the practicalities of the industry as a performing singer. Students may choose to hone their singing skills for their preferred genres and languages, but the repertoire building (within the chosen genre of music) will be targeted for the most practical outcome in real-work experiences.

Bevlyn will also be stricter with the students' commitment to practise to ensure that the student emerges from the programme with his/her highest potential.

2. How Is This Programme Different From Bevlyn's teaching in music colleges?

[A] Budget
The first obvious difference is that students have to spend way more to study in music colleges, to have the possibility to 'do music'. Music education in colleges provides a well-rounded music education, but not everyone has the budgetary means to finance a college education, especially if they have already financed an education earlier and are looking to transit mid-career.

[B] Time
This training programme is designed in mind for mid-career transitioners, or for anyone who desires to embark on a music career with the sole intention to sing. Not everyone has the luxury of time to wait 1-3 years to complete a well-rounded diploma or a degree college certification. For eg. #truestory - a woman in her mid 20s may want to fulfil her dreams as soon as possible so that she does not have to delay family planning due to the rigid duration (and schedule) of a college diploma or degree.
[C] Targeted Repertoire
While Bevlyn teaches vocal techniques and provides career counselling + tips to both her private and college students, she mainly teaches the fixed repertoire that is pre-determined by the college, and students usually choose their preferred choice of songs for artistry expression.
This training programme on the other hand is designed and condensed to streamline syllabus so that the trainee jumps straight to the practical skills required for a working singer. The trainee will be encouraged to express artistry in their vocal expressions, but the programme will guide the trainee to build a suitable repertoire, and be equipped with industrial knowledge for a sustainable gigging career.
